I would imagine anyone from the UK would know what a Dalek is. For those visitors who do not know, a Dalek was an extraterrestrial enemy of Dr Who in the long running British TV series perhaps best known for saying "Exterminate!" frequently. My sister and I would cower behind the sofa at their appearance. They were really scary to small children, as we were.
This Dalek is to be found at The National Media Museum, Bradford, West Yorkshire.
Update 3 Feb:
I thought when I posted this it would create comment, I was correct. I have searched the web and now think a red Dalek is a commander dalek, there was one in the film "Daleks: Invasion Earth 2150 AD" which was second-in-command to the gold Dalek

The moment I saw the thumbnail, I knew I was looking at a Dalek! And I'm not even from UK! Dr Who is my favorite.. Daleks no. Thanks for the post, it made me smile.
ReplyDeleteI love that museum in Bradford (which I still always think of as the National Photography Museum, which is what it was when it opened!). When I was in the sixth form I remember bunking off school to go there, and go ice skating in the rink which is practically next to it. Bad girl!
ReplyDeleteCool! I never got to watch the original series, but I enjoyed the first two seasons of the new one immensely. I don't watch TV so I wait until the entire season's out on DVD and have a viewing marathon ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm a big Dr Who fan so I love this photo! I'll have to go there sometime and check it out.
ReplyDeleteI went there a few years ago and there were some excellent displays to see. I remember the Dalek well, as you can stand next to it and have your photo with it, pretending to be exterminated of course!
ReplyDeleteCan you believe that Dr Who was big in Italy as well? And can you imagine a Dalek speaking Italian? Ciao. Antonella
ReplyDeleteThis beats the cardboard cut out of Dr Who and he Tardis we had in the library.
ReplyDeleteI'm of the original series hiding-behind-the-sofa generation. I thought Daleks were silver! Is this a mutant?
