Lion - Leeds Town Hall, The Headrow, Leeds

Lion Leeds Town Hall Headrow Leeds Yorkshire

This stone lion is one of 2 pairs of lions outside the front of Leeds Town Hall. These were sculpted from portland stone by William Day Keyworth of London.

Today they are still quite magnificent, however as you can see the weather is having some effect on them.

The victorians really liked lions on or near their buildings.  I have photographed several over the last few weeks.

  4. I remember being allowed to sit on one of these lions when I was very small - maybe around 3 or 4!

  6. When I was very young (many years ago), I was solemnly informed that 'the men, who had gone drinking at local pubs, because of the amount of drink consumed, would, when they staggered out of the pubs, see the lions come to life'! Obviously an attempt by my parents to discourage me from drinking when I grew up. Well, I didn't follow their advice and, neither, did I ever see the lions wandering about!
