I was walking through Bradford city centre and came across a town crier, something I have not seen in many years. Having my camera with me I asked this chap if he would mind being seen on the Leeds Photo Daily. As can be seen from the above photograph he said yes.
He is Laurie Gilbert and is the town crier for the towns of Batley and Dewsbury in West Yorkshire. Laurie is a fine fellow and looks splendid in his regalia. On this wet day he was promoting Bradford Noise Action Week for the Environmental Health Dept of Bradford council.

There has to be something faintly ironic about hiring a town crier to inform people about Noise Action Week !
ReplyDeleteMaybe his bell was muted for the occasion.
He does look splendid in that outfit! What a great job.
ReplyDeleteI do like your photograph of this gentleman. I also like the idea of a town crier and wonder why that whole idea was abandoned in favor of things like local police cars going round. I like the town crier idea better.
ReplyDeleteHe's a good sport.
ReplyDeleteNoise Action Week, eh? Curious.
A town crier....how fascinating is that! This is a wonderful photo - great post my friend.
ReplyDeleteInteresting image!
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Wales!
He must have been whispering his message for noise action week. But he certainly adds colour to the town centre.
