The above photograph shows the clock in the Grand Arcade, Leeds, Yorkshire. The clock was designed and built by Robert, James and Joseph Potts of Leeds.
I may be wrong but I think the clock no longer works, pity because it was much more than a simple timepiece. On the hour a door opens and five figures mounted on a revolving stage emerge. There is a British Grenadier Guardsman, a Scotsman, an Irishman, a Canadian, and an Indian. As the stage rotates they disappear into a door on the right hand side of the clock, and a cockerel, above the dial, nods its head, flaps its wings and crows!!! That is what happens in theory, but alas I think not.

That's a shame. Someone should be able to repair I think.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see that clock in action! Too bad it doesn't work anymore.
ReplyDeleteSomeone should contact the local press and start a campaign. Your blog could be the virtual meeting place for all those interested.
ReplyDeleteI bet people would like to see it working again.
It's a crime not to have this beautiful clock working. I like its sense of history.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting Norwich Daily Photo and leaving your comment. Come back tomorrow for more of the Keukenhof series!

Aaw, that's too bad — sounds absolutely wonderful. But even as it stands, it's still fun with those two armored soldiers on its sides.
ReplyDeleteFunny though that the clock isn't working with that saying below it. :-)
