Marks and Spencer 125th birthday Bradford

M&S Marks and Spencer Bradford 125th birthday

This last week Marks & Spencer celebrated its 125th birthday by offering a range of products for one penny. The M&S store in Darley Street Bradford took park in this special sale

In the photograph above you can see Jill who works for M&S taking time out from supervising the queue to let me take her picture for the Leeds photo daily. Behind Jill in the photograph you can see some of the people in the queue outside the store in Bradford, West Yorkshire.

Many people had queued in pouring rain, some for around 2 hours to pay 1p on a first come first served basis, and the money will go towards the M&S 125 Charity Challenge, which aims to raise £1.25 million for local and regional charities.

I have been an Marks and Spencer customer on and off since I was a boy and indeed as I write this the trousers I am wearing I bought in the Bradford shop. I am pleased to have witnessed this little piece of retail history. Marks and Spencer was started on a stall in Leeds Market here in Yorkshire in 1884 by Michael Marks. Thomas Spencer became his partner in the business in 1894, giving the company it now famous name Marks and Spencer.

  1. Wow, that's a very nice photo with that umbrella she's holding. I love the shopping experiences at Marks and Spencer too. Visit M&S often in Singapore...

  4. Thanks for visiting my blog. I always feel bad when I talk about the Revolutionary War and have to mention it was against the British. I'm just stating historic fact, not casting aspersions. I just marvel at the tenacity of these country folk who stood up to the army and as you noticed, at a ripe old age.
