Old Post Office Building - City Square, Leeds

Old Post Office Building City Square LeedsPicture of Old Post Office Building City Square Leeds

I really like this spendid victorian building in City Square in Leeds city centre. This photograph shows the old Leeds GPO (General Post Office) built in 1896 by Sir Henry Tanner.

The Post Office decided they no longer needed this building so the ground floor now houses a Loch Fyne restaurant.

I used to call into this Post Office at least 3 afternoons per week on the way home from work (used to sell a lot of DVDs on eBay). The consequence of the current Royal Mail management deciding to close many city centre Post Offices can be seen here in the St John Centre Post Office Leeds.

In the foreground you can see the really fine statue of Edward the Black Prince.

  1. It is a beautiful building. Nice picture.

Forget about the St Johns Post office, have you been to the one in Kirkgate. It is horrific! There is always a queue and its always full of drunks and hobos drawing out thier Giro.

  2. It's such a magnificent building, Paul. It's so lovely and a shame that they decided to stop using it. Ever eaten at Loch Fyne? We have one here in Norwich, but haven't been yet as it's difficult to find something for my veggie hubby.

  3. Why is he called the Black Prince, by the way?

  4. And people thought our American era neo-classical Manila Central Post Office was impressive. It's nothing compared to this! Magnificent!

  5. Joy, thanks for being such a regular visitor to Leeds Photo DailyHe was only called the Black Prince after his death, perhaps because of his dark armour, but also perhaps because he was not a man to cross. At the siege of the French town of Limoges he was so furious with the townsfolk because they went back on their word, that when he captured it he had killed around 3,000 men, women and children.

Katie, yes I have been down to that Post Office a couple of times, but never again!!
