Picture of statue of Wellington on Woodhouse moor, Leeds.Walking back across Woodhouse moor I passed the bronze statue of the Duke of wellington. The statue of the hero of Waterloo Arthur Wellesley was erected in the square in front of Leeds town hall in 1855. However it was boarded up until Queen Victoria came to Leeds in 1858 to open the town hall.
Later in 1937 the square was redesigned and the statue of the Iron Duke as he was known was moved to its current position on the edge of Woodhouse moor.

The good old Duke of Wellington! I'm intrigued why this statue got boarded up, but nice it saw the light of day again. (Looks like the good weather is still holding).
ReplyDeleteLovely blue sky in the background!
ReplyDeleteI must admit I don't know much about the Duke of Wellington. Did he have a special connection with Leeds?
Londonlulu.. The statue was boarded up until Queen Victoria came to open the town hall. Back then the visit of the monarch was a huge event in the days before radio and TV.
ReplyDeleteLibrarian.. Not that I know of but at the time of his death he was nationally a hero, the victor of Waterloo he had defeated Bonaparte. This was long before you could be regarded as a hero for kicking a ball about.
What are the red boots all about Paul?
ReplyDeleteI am curious about the red boot, too. They are really red! That old Duke of Wellington is always popping up somewhere. Glad the statue is no longer boarded up. genie
