Picture of bird nesting in traffic lights in Leeds city centreThis bird and its partner have got quite a lot of attention due to its choice as a nice place to build its nest. Their choice of an ideal nesting spot was a traffic light in the middle of a very busy Leeds city junction.
Compared to some nests this one has at least got good overhead cover and is well lit at least off and on.
I spoke with a chap who works locally but had been away on holiday and he was just looking to see if they were still there and OK. We were both surprised by the number of people who walked within a few feet but did not notice this unusual city sight.
Since I first heard of this nest, the young have hatched and the two thrushes are now busy feeding their brood.

You can get an idea of the location that the birds chose from the above photo that was taken by me this morning. I do not envy the young birds when they make their first flight. I should add that just to the near left of the this picture there is a nice grassed area with some trees.

These birds surely did find a unique home!!! Hope the young-uns are good and strong when they begin to fly!!!
ReplyDeleteThe creativity of "city" birds is amazing - that first photo is terrific & good to know the young ones are now here. (Reminds me of New Yorkers going breathless over red hawks who chose one year to nest on the edge of a skyscraper.)
ReplyDeleteAll the best to the little ones! A unique place for a nest indeed.
ReplyDeleteAmazing she has nested here with all the noise and constant illumination. It is unusual to see a Song Thrush nest so a real find Paul.
ReplyDeleteWow, that's almost unbelievable- the red light going on and off doesn't bother them too much then? Wonder if it gives off much heat. You should send this to BBC Springwatch! Brilliant post Paul.
ReplyDeleteUnique place!
ReplyDeleteUnique image.
Well seen and well done.
Well! Most surprising! But, surely, hats off too to the people of Leeds for leaving the nest alone.
