Having caught up with the canal barge with the little face peeking out from the ajar door on the hutch I got to ask what it was and yes it was a pet ferret.
Having been introduced to Drusilla, who was very sweet, but she was excited and kept weaving about, I think my camera should have ferret mode...
For anyone who might not have seen it here is a short clip from a live broadcast of Calendar the Yorkshire TV show where presenter Richard Whiteley met a ferret.
