Through The Archway

St Johns Church LeedsPicture of St Johns church Leeds.

Walking along New Briggate in Leeds city centre I passed the archway entrance to the church of St John and the iron gateway was locked. This entrance to this rather interesting redundant church, the oldest in Leeds city centre seems to me at least to have been locked for many months now.

I am not even sure that the church is open at all now, there was a time when it was opened and manned by volunteers several days a week but I am not sure this still happens.

I took the above photograph of St Johns by sticking my camera through the gates metal bars.

  1. I like the shot very much, and the church is beautiful. I've heard that many of these beautiful old churches are unused, or being repurposed in England. Is this true?

  2. Great view, leads you right up to the front door.

  3. The churches and cathedrals of England are magnificent and so memorable once seen. How I miss my trips each summer with my students. Those trips were the highlight of each school year. This is a lovely capture. genie

  4. Excellent photo. I do not understand what's going on there - the gate must have been locked for a couple of years now. The church used to be open all day and occasional Evensongs were held. I suppose we should ask the Churches' Conservation Trust what's going on!
