Austerity And Invention: Illustration Between The Wars

Leeds Art Exhibition

I have always been interested in the art of illustration but especially the illustration of books.  This being so I had been looking forward to catching the latest exhibition at the University art gallery, Austerity And Invention: Illustration Between The Wars.  This is the sequel of an earlier exhibition "Fancy and Imagination: Aubrey Beardsley and the Book Illustrators" which I caught early last year.

The current exhibition features original art works from both the University Library Special Collection and other collections here in Yorkshire.  There are works by Arthur Rackham, William Heath Robinson and Edmund Dulac amongst others.

Ariadne and Bacchus, by Edmund Dulac (1882-1953), gouache on paper, 1933 for American Weekly, Private Collection, ©The Estate of Edmund Dulac/Photo: Norman Taylor, 2012.

Austerity And Invention: Illustration Between The Wars is on at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery in the Parkinson Building at the University of Leeds until 1 December 2012, entry is free.

  1. It's beautiful - both the writing on the wall and the painting!
